Overview
The adenoids are a mass of soft tissue behind the nasal cavity. Like lymph nodes, adenoids are part of the immune system and are made of the same type of lymphoid tissue. The adenoids and tonsils work by trapping germs coming in through the mouth and nose.
We all have adenoids at birth and in childhood, but as we go into adolescence, they begin to shrink. The adenoids of most people have vanished by adulthood.

Causes
Enlarged adenoids can be caused by allergies. Some children have enlarged adenoids from birth. They grow until a child is 5 years of age. Normally, they begin to shrink after around the age of 7 years. They shrink considerably in adulthood.
Inflammation of the adenoids often forms an infection. Various bacteria or viruses may cause adenoiditis
